- Important Moment: Hugo thinks he’d be terrified if he saw a human, but when he sees one for the first time, he’s surprised to find that he’s not scared at all.
- Ask and Share: Can you think of a time when you felt nervous before a new experience (examples: first day of school, trying a new skill, meeting a new friend)? What happened? Were your feelings different before and after?
Big Trouble. Chapters 6–10
- Important Moment: Hugo sends his boat down the stream in his room, which begins a series of messages between him and the Human.
- Ask and Share: What are some unexpected ways or places to strike up a friendship? Would you want to communicate with a friend you couldn’t see?
Sailing Messages. Chapters 11–16
- Important Moment: In preparation for the Frog Moon Festival, Mrs. Nukluk asks the class to create scary masks from clay and materials collected from the woods. Hugo decides to make a shark mask.
- Ask and Share: If you were in Hugo’s class, what kind of mask would you make? How would you design it? Which materials would you use to make it?
Real Friends. Chapters 17–22
- Important Moment: Boone and Hugo discover they had wrong information. Sasquatches don’t smell like rotten eggs, humans don’t smell like dead porcupines, and they don’t want to hurt each other.
- Ask and Share: What are some things humans and Sasquatches think they know about each other? How do Hugo and Boone ignore these things and become friends anyway? What message is the story sharing with us?
